Current and Recommended Equipment
In this section were going to talk about some of the basic and more advanced equipment that we use on our investigations. Not all of this is necessary or needed. Some of these items are very expensive and not all investigative teams have every item listed. Don’t worry; you can still perform a thorough investigation using most of the items listed. I hope that this will help you to understand the scientific approach that is taken when we come into a home or area.
Flashlight - This one is common sense. Most likely, it will be dark during your investigation.
35 MM Camera/Digital Camera - You don't need anything fancy. Disposable cameras will work. Usually just something with at least 400 speed film will do. Black and white film is also something good to try.
We currently are using a Kodak DC215 Digital, Canon ZR 200 Digital Video Camcorder, Sony DSC-F717 digital camera, Kodak Easy Share CX7430 digital camera, Cannon 35 mm.
Audio Recorder - It's best to use an external microphone when recording EVP (Electronic Voice Phenomena) because it's less likely to pick up the sounds of the tape recorder gears and having these sounds could make your tape worthless.
We currently are using an Olympus Digital Voice Recorder VN-120, RCA digital voice recorder and a GE mini-cassette recorder.
Video Camera (optional tripod) - Regular video cameras can be used for video taping in lighted or day light conditions only, unless you have a camcorder that has a low lux setting (the ability to record in low light) or the night vision type which can record in the dark. A camcorder with the night vision option is great for this type of work. A tripod will help keep the camera steady.
We are currently using a Canon ZR200 Digital Video Camcorder, Sony Handycam w/nightshot and a Sony DCR-TRV460 video camcorder.
EMF Meter - These are meters that will read the Electro Magnetic Field (EMF) in an area and report it back to you. From research preformed, when a spirit or ghost is present they draw energy from the air around them. This we think this does two things, lowers the air temp and causes fluxes in the electro magnetic field. Make sure that you know where power lines, electrical line, major appliances and electronics are before you begin your readings as they will give off high EMF readings and you don't want false evidence.
We currently are using a Dr. Guass EMF meter and an Energize EMF detector.
Motion Detectors - These can sense movements by often unseen forces/spirit. There's battery operated ones you can buy.
Thermometer - With these you can get the temperature of a spot. From research preformed, when a spirit or ghost is present they draw energy from the air around them. This we think this does two things, lowers the air temp and causes fluxes in the electro magnetic field.
We currently are using a Radio Shack IR Non-Contact Thermometer, Texas Instruments digital thermometer and a Raytek Mini-Temp digital thermometer.
Cellular Phone - This just could come in handy while on a hunt.
Hand Held Radios - These are useful if you have a group that is spread out. They will help in keeping everyone in touch.
We are currently using Motorola T4500 walkie talkie.
Compass – A compass is used to show direction and will also act erratically in a magnetic field.
We currently are using a Texas Instruments digital compass.
Global Positioning Detector – Can be used for same purposes as a compass.
We are currently using a Garmin GPS 12 XL global positioning detector.
First Aid Kit - Bring this just in case. It will most likely be dark and it's very easy to trip and get cut.
Notebook/Pen - You need to log everything that happens. Everything weird you hear/see, temperature changes, basic notes, interviews and other evidence to prove/disprove a haunting.
Watch - So, while taking notes (mentioned above), you can log in the times of events, your arrival and departure, etc.
Proper Clothes - Don't wear anything that will get in the way while investigating. Also wear proper clothes depending on the type of weather. You don't want to be too cold/hot because then you are not at your best and your observation skills could suffer.
Identification - Always keep I.D. on you and be sure to obey all laws. If the cemetery is closed at night, don't trespass. Ask the appropriate parties for permission to enter.
A Friend - Always bring a friend. There are a few reasons for this, if you get hurt, someone will be there to help; if you see something, you'll have another witness there to see it also. Where you’re at will probably be dark and out of the way (like old cemeteries). These are prime spots for bums, drug dealers, etc. to hang out so it's just smart to have someone with you.
Extra's - Spirit activity has been known to drain fully charged batteries, so pack up extra's, along with extra film, audio & video tapes, etc.
Be creative. Keep in mind that this is a fairly new field there are no set rules to it.
